Who Cares About the Uniform Probate Code?

You Do. Finally, after about twenty years of thinking about it -- Massachusetts adopted the Uniform Probate Code. That means our probate laws will be more like those of other states and that the word "Probate" will be less scary than it used to be. For example:

* You will be able to appoint an estate administrator in 7 days instead of 5 months;
* There will be more protections for beneficiaries of trusts; and,
* More protections for people under guardianship.

The law isn't completely effective right now. Some changes went into effect in July 2009, but the entire law won't be in place until July  2011. Nevertheless, now is a good time to make sure that your estate plan is up to date and to visit your favorite lawyer.
