Small Business Marketing for the Holidays

Small businesses need to be creative with their marketing. It is not business as usual. The end of November includes Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday. More than half of holiday shoppers plan to do half or more of their holiday shopping at local retailers. Take advantage of this trend by employing the following marketing strategies:

Email your customers and potential customers to increase sales. The vast majority of small business owners have found email to be important to their sales. When a customer first registers for your email list or makes a purchase, respond with a thank you note and a discount code. This will keep you connected to your customers. Part of an effective email strategy includes using email marketing software, splitting your list into specific demographic groups or other characteristics, and creating compelling subject lines. Focus on what is most important to your customers for the holiday season. Possibilities include sales, new products and services, preordering and curbside pickup options, and shipping timeframes. Be in frequent touch, but don’t overdo it. If you inundate your customers with emails they may unsubscribe from your list.
Use social media to effectively interact with your customers and market your business. Use multiple platforms. You can illustrate why existing and prospective customers should buy your products or services. Retail businesses can make a Facebook Live event to show off merchandise that makes the perfect holiday gift. Broadcast what is new. Service based businesses should consider providing and marketing gift cards as holiday presents. Show how your services and offerings can minimize the stress of the holiday season. Employ hashtags and work with other businesses to make sure your social media posts are seen by as many people as possible.

Keep your small business personal. We might have to work at this a little harder this year with so much being remote. Send handwritten notes to those on your mailing list. Write thank you notes following purchases. Post videos of your staff thanking your customers for their support of your business in 2023. Excellent service is more important than ever. It has a huge impact in customer retention and in gaining new customers. Respond promptly to phone, email, and social media messages. Personal touches can make a big difference in standing out from your competition.

Focus on your holiday marketing plans. Take advantage of customers’ intentions to shop small and shop local. Boost your end of year sales while generating leads and loyalty into the future.
